There is something about which I have wondered for a good few years, and your thoughts would be appreciated. Just what were the insignia of the (Western) Emperor that were sent to Constantinople after the deposition of Romulus Augustulus in 476?

Thinking about this, what were the Emperors’ insignia generally? I have a memory that a diadem wasn’t part of these. However, what, then, were the insignia of the Roman Kings (and I do realise I’ve just gone back about a thousand years!)? The Kings’ regalia of which I think I am aware were the fasces, a purple/coloured toga and the seat/throne.

    Best regards
