Possible Redesign

Currently rogueclassicism is a three-column blog. I’m pondering going to a four-column template in order to incorporate a number of items that I post to twitter which might be of interest which generally don’t get ‘full treatement’ at rc. Would four columns be ‘too much’? (the template provided would put content in the left column and it would be porportionately narrower … some photos I’ve previously posted are a bit too wide for this layout; I’m more concerned whether it might be too difficult for folks to read; this site has an example of the layout (obviously not content)).

    No, no, no, no! The page is familiar and easy to read just as it is. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

    I like the site, as is. However, if you feel you need to make changes (“new”? “improved”? have yet to be proven beneficial in most instances) then do what makes it easiest for you to keep all the good info coming to us!!! Thanks for all the little bits and big bits that you offer to us who thirst after more than daily drivel.

    Layout example too busy – and font size too small.

    Don’t see what’s wrong with what you have, suggest to tinker a bit with that one.

    I don’t like the 4-column WordPress theme you are looking at, because the main column is too narrow, and the other columns are too obtrusive. I like the blue-green color scheme, however.

    I think you should stick with what you’ve got, but it shouldn’t be difficult to add a Twitter plugin to your existing theme. There are any number of Twitter plugins on the WordPress site. See

    You may need to make a small change to the code of your current theme to display it, or maybe not even that, depending how the theme is written.

      Oh I already have twitter feeds in one of the columns; that’s one of the reasons I was pondering this switch because i don’t think people are aware of all the info in the side column because it extends so far down the page. I want to include rss feeds for a hashtag system i’ve figured out so folks will see the ephemeral links to reviews of books, performances, and assorted other items that don’t always make it to rc because their interest is only ‘passing’ … i can do it in the arrangement i have now, but will obviously have to do some rearranging …

    Twitter Widget Pro looks good, and is highly rated:

    It has the facility to add the feed to a page using shortcode. This means you can add the Twitter feed wherever you like by simply including

    [twitter-widget username=”yourTwitterUsername”]

    anywhere in the text itself.

    There are a quite a number of different settings you can control, such as how many items it displays, title at the top, display twitter avatar, hide replies, etc.

    those are .org things; i’ve got .com and am pretty much handcuffed widget-wise to whatever is provided with the template …

      Sorry, I assumed you were running your own WordPress installation. I haven’t used WordPress MU (the version which is run on the .com site), but I’ve created custom sites and themes in WordPress, and even written simple widgets.

      According to the WordPress.org site (under Features), they have a lot of widgets you can add to your sidebar. They say:

      “Sidebar widgets for Flickr, del.icio.us, Twitter, and more

      You can add “widgets” to your sidebar and rearrange them without touching any HTML code or messing up your blog. Just drag and drop the sidebar widgets around, and instantly you can have fun stuff in your sidebar. We’re adding new widgets all the time based on your feedback and requests.”

      So maybe there are more widgets available than you think, and perhaps you can find something suitable which you can just add at the top of your sidebar.

      You can also rearrange the order of the current items on your sidebar simply by dragging them around under ‘Widgets’ on the Dashboard.

    I’d rather you stick with 3 columns. Four columns might be good for wide screens, but many aren’t.
