In that article and Mary Beard’s linked article both mention ‘lava’ forming the human cast voids.
But there were no lava flows in the 79 eruption.
And the last lava flow to hit the area of later day Pompeii was in prehistoric times.
Pompeii in 79AD was buried and destroyed by the Tephra raining down and later pyroclastic flows (surges?) which killed and covered those plaster cast victims.
