The Department of Classics at the University of Arizona is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the position of Assistant Professor (non-tenure eligible). A non-tenure-eligible assistant professor is appointed initially for a one-year period. This appointment may be renewed an indefinite number of times subject to satisfactory annual performance evaluation. Promotion to non-tenure eligible associate professorship is possible after a minimum of three years of service in rank.

The candidate’s teaching strengths should focus on imperial Roman historians and imperial Roman culture. Ph.D. in Classics must be in hand by August 1, 2013.

The Department of Classics, Faculty of Arts, at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time probationary position at the rank of Instructor I or Instructor II. The successful candidate will teach between six and eight three-credit-hour courses per year, depending upon the responsibilities which s/he is assigned for academic service. The courses will normally include some combination of the Department’s first-year Classical Studies survey courses (Introduction to Ancient Greek Culture and Introduction to Ancient Roman Culture), its survey course in Greek and Roman Mythology, and its introductory and intermediate courses inancient Greek and Latin. Duties will also include student advising, public outreach and service to the Department, Faculty and University. The appointee will be an experienced instructor with a demonstrable record of superior teaching, and applicants are required to show special interest, ability andsuccess in teaching introductory courses. Those who have made or are likely to make pedagogical contributions to the discipline through the scholarship ofteaching and/or their development and dissemination of teaching materials will be at an advantage. A completed PhD in Classics is preferred. The effective date of the appointment will be July 1, 2013.

The Department of Classics at the University of Manitoba currently has a vigorous staff complement of 6 permanent members with professorial rank. This complement is regularly augmented by part-time and/or temporary lecturers, instructors and teaching assistants. The Department offers undergraduate major and minor programs in Greek, Latin and Classical Studies and an M.A. in Classics. The 42nd Annual Meeting of the Classical Association of the Pacific
Northwest (CAPN) will take place at the University of Oregon, March
15-16, 2013.

Call for Papers: We invite papers on any aspect of Graeco-Roman
antiquity, and we especially seek those that are likely to be of broad
interest and make connections among the different elements of the
ancient world. Such connections can be between Greek society and Roman
society, between different disciplines such as archaeology, literature
and history, or between different genres of literature. We also welcome
pedagogical papers, especially those that address the instruction of
Latin and Greek at primary, secondary and university levels. Teachers
and students of the Classics at any level of instruction (K-12, college,
or university) may submit abstracts; all papers will be judged
anonymously by the Program Committee, chaired by CAPN President Mary
Jaeger.

Abstracts of no more than 200 words may be submitted by email to this

Vacancy: Lecturer in Classics, University of Otago, New Zealand

The University of Otago is the oldest university in New Zealand. The Chair
in Classics was one of the three foundation chairs established in 1869,
and the Department is known for its excellence in research and teaching.
Our academic staff are recognised internationally for their scholarly
contributions in the broad fields of classical literature, history, and
archaeology, and are well represented in leading journals and on editorial
boards.

We particularly seek a new colleague who will augment and bolster our
existing research strengths and innovative teaching programme. This
lectureship is a permanent, full-time (confirmation-path) position.
Applicants will be qualified at PhD level, and will show clear evidence
of, or at least strong potential for, internationally rated publications,
and a willingness to seek external research funds. (Please attach a sample

While applications will be considered from candidates whose research
interests lie in any branch of classical studies, teaching expertise in
art/archaeology, mythology or philosophy or film/reception is desirable,
plus the ability to teach Greek language (preferably both Greek and Latin)
to a high level. Previous teaching experience (especially of large
classes) is also desirable, as well as a demonstrated ability to enthuse

The successful appointee will be required to teach both language and
classical civilisation courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate
levels; to supervise research at Honours, Masters and PhD levels; to
develop and maintain a strong research profile; and to undertake
administrative roles and community/professional service activities which
contribute to the overall effectiveness and standing of the Department.
